Wireless Charging to Be Available by 2015

Cota by Ossia is a device capable of delivering wireless power to charge everyday electronic devices. Its first demo happened on-stage at Disrupt, a tech showcase for multiple gadgets. The Cota prototype can charge electronic devices from as long as 30ft away.

Physicist Hatem Zaine came up with the concept by back engineering the solution to an everyday problem. Charging our electronic devices everyday is annoying; forgetting to charge them is even worse. Zaine took into consideration many factors, including interference with other wireless signals, delivering power to multiple devices, and health of course; no good being able to charge your phone without a cable but turning into a mutant.

Zaine demonstrated the Cota by charging his iPhone 5 remotely from his version one prototype wireless power transmitter. The next step is to deliver a commercial-grade product, which according to the team behind Cota will be about the size of a PC tower. It will go around and through walls, and will be able to recognize a specific set of devices it will give access to; there are enough people trying to steal your wi-fi, you don’t need them trying to steal your wireless power too.

The most interesting thing about having this technology available to lots of people, is that if it catches on, the whole idea behind batteries could change dramatically. There would be no need for “charging” if there is constant power running through the device. This may lead to insane new designs that won’t require the outdated idea of a battery, which hasn’t really kept up with the level of development other technologies have gone through the last decade.
