The war between Samsung and Apple continues. Samsung, an equivalent competitor to Apples image has beaten Apple this time in creative technological innovation.  In a couple of months, by Christmas, this could be the new thing!.

Samsung has utilized its resources to create the “Samsung Galaxy Gear”. They played on the concept of so called smart watches which have been around for awhile, just never gathered much attention. However this could be the new target market which has not yet been captured! And Samsung took advantage leaving Apple nowhere to be seen.

Now you must be dying to know what this new product can do. First of all the Gear is a new way to access your phone, with Gear you are able to wirelessly connect the smart watch to you smart phone and its features include making calls, receiving calls without ever taking your phone out of  your pocket.

During the same day as Samsungs press release Wednesday, Sony and Qualcomm had also introduced smart watches. Apple finally said they were expected to release one of their own however unclear when. There is expected to be a huge hype in this new found market, even Google is getting involved. Designing their own Google glass, a device designed to work like a Smartphone, and then worn like a pair of glasses.

Research from Gartner projects explained that wearable smart electronics will be a $10 billion dollar industry by 2016. I guess this is the new industry to take advantage of, if the bigger companies have not already claimed it.

It may be all go at the moment, however good things take time. Samsung may have let that slip. Ramon Llamas from IDC an analyst implied that for a smart watch to succeed there must be more to it than incoming messages.  There are apps like RunKeeper which tracks workout that Gear works with, However there are not many other features offered.

Hoping that Apple will create a better version of this smart watch as Samsung doesn’t seemed like they pushed their creation to its optimal potential.  Consumers need more than just a convenient small screen at the price they are expected to have.

Samsung smart watches uses Google’s android operating system, the strap comes in six colours, with a basic camera, it can also be linked to a tablet which can then access face book, emails and voice commands can also be used to set alarms, creating calendars and checking the weather. A downside would be the battery life. It can only be used in a day before it needs charging.

The Gear goes on sale in the U.S.A and Japan next month, however the rest of the world, it would be available on September the 25th. Prices are starting at (US299) which in NZ dollars is $378. Is it really worth it? Or will you wait for Apples invention or the Google glass?
