Remember watching RoboCop years ago and thinking about how you would feel with RoboCops guarding your city rather than just the police force? Or maybe even wishing you were a RoboCop? A 23 year old Australian student is bringing this one step closer to reality. The design of this high tech helmet for officers on motorbikes displays all the information an officer might need on the visor of his or her helmet. It works on the same sort of concept as Google Glass (except less cool and cyber geeky and more crime fighter like).

The helmet contains all the vital information police officers need without the chunky hardware. It is designed to improve response time and availability of officers. It goes without saying that in an emergency you want someone there as soon as possible, with this helmet, officers can receive updates and notifications in real time as they happen, while riding their bikes.

The helmets use what’s called a ‘heads-up’ display. This is the display on the riders visor that is designed to show just basic information that is colour coded and easy to read, put simply it’s the information officers need now, not all the fancy over the top features they could potentially need. The ‘heads-up’ display is all about giving the officers as much as possible while avoiding confusion, information overload and rider distraction. The helmet also includes step by step GPS navigation and automatic number plate recognition, where the officer simply has to look at a number plate for five seconds and the helmet will search up information on that driver.

There has already been interest from Police in both Australia and the U.S in getting these, but somehow I think the mean streets of New Zealand probably won’t be seeing RoboCop looking Motorbike cops in the near future.
