Mini planes? Or Flying Cars?

The Terrafugia Transition is the next step towards flying cars.  This little big thing is designed to make flying safer, easier and more accessible in society. It focuses on the concept of auto-pilot, where the user doesn’t have to do everything, and a co-pilot isn’t needed, the co-pilot is the Transition itself. Terrafugia wants to make using one of these as easy as possible because as we all know most of us don’t actually know how to fly a plane.

The Transition is packed with features that enhance this, for instance it won’t let you fly yourself into bad weather, and if you keep trying it will ‘abort mission’ and land itself at the nearest airport. Another is its wings that fold up after landing, so that you can in fact drive around in it.

The whole concept of the Transition is a plane that can fly itself, so essentially you get all the benefits of having your own plane (at a nice large price) without needing the full knowledge of a pilot. The Transition is designed to be a vehicle for sports pilots – the type of pilots that can get certified with as little as 20 hours of training. Terrafugia believes that these pilots could use the Transition for journeys with bad weather for example, where instead of having to fly through risky weather, or abort the journey completely the pilots could land at one of the public airports (in the U.S there are about 5000) and continue their trip on the road.Terrafugia -transition -drive -02

The whole concept has obviously hit off quite well in U.S with a lot of interest just from the prototype, but with a price tag of $279,000USD it’s definitely a decision to consider well.

What do you think? Will they hit off?

Would you buy one if you had the money?

Would you trust someone flying you in one?
